In this beginner level course students will be introduced to the history, materials, and techniques of pen and ink. Thanks to the rich and lengthy history of the medium we are able to observe the similarities and differences from classical to contemporary examples. While ink can be intimidating, we will discuss and put into practice a variety of simple mark-making techniques, through simple exercises, which give the ability to define both light and dark. There are two brief lectures and students will complete assigned exercises in class in preparation for a more refined final assignment.
